IE slow on SSL connections on Win98

By nierman@BSD ·
Perhaps someone has an idea for the following problem:

I have a machine which duel boots win2k and win 98. (originally was win 2k, used system commander to install win 9. Under win98 I'm experiancing a slowness on certain SSL web sites at login. After entering a username and hitting tab (or cliking in the pw box with the mouse) there is a noticible delay before the cursor moves to the PW box. Here are some notes about the case:

The machine is a dell GX400 with 384 mgs ram

When accessing the same sites on the same machine from win2k there is no slowness.

When accessing the same sites from other w98 machines- no slowness.

Problem occurs with IE5.5, Upgraded to 6- didn't help.

Tried cleaning out all temp files on machine- including the "temp int file" folder.

At one point the machine had the w32.weird virus, but that has been cleaned, and user says problem occured immediatly after w98 was installed.

Re-ran w98 setup over existing installation- didn't help.

Thanks.

IE slow on SSL connections on Win98

Another problem on the same machine which may or may not be related. When I try to set up the winfax sharing client(v 10) in ip the entire machine starts to crawl to a halt. Future logins to the NT domain are slow and take about 7 min.

In order to fix this problem I have to re-install w98 over the existing installation. After the reinstall the domain login problem works, but the internet login problems persists.

If I try to reconfigure the winfax client again I start all over with the slow domain login problems again.

I have tried removing all the networking components (ip the nic) and re-installing them but it hasn't worked.

Thanks for your assistance.

I was thinking these problems may be IP related so I unins

Yes!
Specially under SSL page you will notice the major benefits of w2k. Be sure also to have the same explorer version. Many security issues are made part of the kernel in w2k , thus it speeds up.

I know that win2k works better, but I need it to work in 98, as this user has another app that won't run in 2k.
