ie won't dowload

By artzelda ·
internet explorer won't download files from a number of sites, but netscape does. IE downloads from Windows Update site works. IE goes directly to the file download progress window and skips the files download dialog window (skips "save to disk or run from here" window)I have tried everything I can think of, even reinstalling. Cleared cache, temp files, hosts files, checked with different ISP's performed tracert and ping, cleared IE keys in registry, etc. Running Win98 1st ed. Any ideas!!! Microsoft support and KB unable to find solution. Would like to avoid WIn98 reinstall.

What version of IE? IE 5.5 is buggy, consider downgrading to IE 5.1. Also consider upgrading Win98 to Win98 Second Edition!

Went all the way back to ie4.0 and have the same problem with IE4.0. Upgrading to SE is not a solution because IE 5.5 was working properly with Win98 1st ed. I uninstalled applications so see if there was a conflict and no effect.

OK, then try this - delete all copies of wininet.dll found on your system, and reinstall IE - whichever version you prefer.

Wait a second - I just re-read your comment when you rejected my previous attempt at a solution. You say the IE 5.5 was working with Win98 1st edition, right. OK, have you considered removing or using a different version of Netscape? Are you answering "No" when IE asks you if you want IE to be your default browser? If so, you might want to choose "Yes."

IE5.5 is my default browser. Am using Netscape 4.75 an it works perfectly. I only have trouble with IE5.5 when I try to download some Microsoft files. When I download from OFFICE or WINDOWS Update I have no problem.

Two things to check -
1) How much free space is there on the drive. While I'd imagine there is "more than enough" if you are short on space it can cause a problem.
2) Check this, especially since you can download using Netscape. Go to tools, internet options, on the general tab click settings and see how "large" the temporary internet files is set to. If its too small it too can cause problems with downloads.

Have over 600MB free space on drive. Increased size of temp internet files and it doesn't help. Any other suggestions?

Let me make sure I understand the question.
If you try to download in IE does it not prompt you for what you want to do with the file, either save as or open?
If that is the case, look here in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions for the Dword value AlwaysPromptWhenDownload this value should be set to 1. I have had to add this value to PC's when the check box for always ask is inadvertantly messed with.
Hope that helps.

I don't have a key called "restrictions". What do I do now?

Just add that key in, then add the value to it. I have done this on Win98 SE with no problems.
