First - what is exact version of your IE5 5.1 or 5.5 with SP? Did you try to repair installation? To do this go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, highlight IE, click Remove and choose repair installation. Another option is to upgrade to the latest version IE 6.0. Is your Registy o'k?

Sorry,if this may not help
Open the browser and select Tools menu,Internet Options,on Home Page click the Default button
Now click the Advanced tab and select Reset Web Settings and Restore to default
This will not get rid of the spy ware though and you will probaly have to wipe the drive and due clean install or try to live with it.

Check your startup folders or other places that programs run. Also run a search in the registry for that link. You will probably find that you have a program running somewhere on your system (could even be a BAT file) that sets this no matter whatyou do. It could even be a script file somewhere.

Its a little late, but a copy of GoBack Software would have solved the problem early on, because you could have rolled back to a date prior to the point when the setting changed.

you could try a program called Ad-aware v5.62, you can download for free from one of the links below. It finds all spyware on your system & can remove them, it sounds like you have more than just a cookie there's likely a file somewhere.
Ad-aware should be able to find it for you.

just type AD-aware in the search at CNET.

This is AD-aware's homepage, their site seems to have a bandwidth problem, real slow.
