IE6 can’t display pages

I recently installed a 3Com NIC in a workstation on a peer to peer LAN, the pc also dials the internet using a standard Dialup. I couldn’t get the NIC going so changed it to a DLINK 530 and that was fine, afterwards however, IE 6 on the pc could notdisplay Web pages. The Dialup is fine and verified username and passwords, I can ping Internet IP addresses but not by name (unknown host error messages). I’ve removed the modem, dialup networking and the NIC (the whole ’98 IP and network stack) andreinstalled but same problem. I’ve also added DNS entries to the the Dialup connection and to the TCP/IP properties in Network Neibourhood (these were not there before) but still no joy.
