IE6 SP2 FTP File “Cannot Find Server”

    Locked

    by coliveria ·

I am trying to use IE 6 SP2 to allow my users to get to various ftp files by clicking on links. I am using ftp://domain number/directory/filename structure to access the files. I am able to use IE to go to the ftp directory and double click the file. It works in firefox browser but it does not work with IE 6 sp2. I tried all the fixes on the web:
    * uncheck “show friendly http error messages” box.
    * check and uncheck “enable third party browser extensions”
I need to have users click on a link to access many files. Is there a fix for this FTP IE6 bug?

Give Microsoft Support a call and see if it is a reported, but not yet acknowledged bug.

couldnt this be a rights/permissions issue?
does this happen it a user belonging to the administrators group (for a test?)
anything in the event log on the ftp server and workstation?
      something to try maybe:
To enable folder view for FTP sites, use the following steps: 1. Start Internet Explorer.
      2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
      3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box.

or, try turning it off (rdl):
When you turn on folder view for FTP sites, the Internet Explorer client bypasses the Web Proxy and tries to send FTP connection requests directly to the Internet. This operation is unsuccessful.
