Have found an interesting issue, that would APPEAR to be addressed simply, but it is not the case.
Symptom: when opening an attachment in Outlook 2003, you receive the message:
“Can’t create file: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click on Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder”
Researching this brought me a variety of “resolutions”:
1. Delete the OLKXXX files from under TempInetFiles folder
2. Delete the TempInetFiles folder
3. Use the registry to redirect to the Temp folder instead
4. Delete the entire Local Settings folder
5. Create a new Outlook profile
6. Uninstall and reinstall Outlook.
7. Uninstall and reinstall Office 2003.
After doing ALL of these – the problem still existed (and no, there was not a permissions issue.)
SO – I did the ultimate fix, right? I reinstalled the entire system from scratch. Problem gone. I can open attachments again.
Whoops. I then installed IE7. The problem returns immediately. Uninstall IE7 – revert back to (gasp!) IE6, I can now download attachments again.
I have not seen anyone put these two items together, and with IE7 in place have gone through all the “suggested fixes” again, and it still is broken. Removing IE7 gets rid of the issue entirely.
Am I missing something here? Microsoft? Are you listening?
