IE7 IS NOT RESPONDING, TAKING UP 99% OF CPU

By CAMUSED ·
WHEN I OPEN UP IE7 THE COMPUTER STOPS RESPONDING. IN TASK MANGR I NOTICED THAT THERE IS 1 PROCESS RUNNING TAKING UP 99% OF CPU. ON THE APPLICATIONS TAP THERE ARE 2
IE7 APPLICATIONS LISTED BOTH ARE NOT RESPONDING. I STOP THE PRECESS TREE TO FREE UP THE COMPUTER. IVE TRIED SEVERAL SEARCHES TO FIND ANY RELATED ISSUES WITH NO LUCK. I HAVE DONE THE FOLLOWING TO TRY AND FIX THIS
ISSUE:
1) REINSTALLED IE7
2) INSTALLED IE8
3) UNINSTALLED IE8 AND REINSTALLED IE7
4) DISABLED ALL BHO'S IN ADD-ON MGR
5) RESET IE7 SETTINGS
6) CLEARED ALL IE CACHE, COOKIES,
TEMP FILES.
ANY IDEAS ON WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE AND RESOLUTION WOULD BE
APPRCIATED

It's the caps lock key!

AND, it would help a lot if you told us what process is taking 99% of your processor.

End task it then

What do you want us to do about it?

Next time, try not to type in all caps. And somehow you forgot to mention your OS name and version, your patch level (service packs) and what application is using 99% CPU (guessing it is SVCHost, which is a common problem, just end task it).

IE7 IS NOT RESPONDING, TAKING UP 99% OF CPU

by CAMUSED In reply to IE7 IS NOT RESPONDING, TA ...

sorry I forgot some critical info, was doing too much at one time when I submitted this post. XP pro 2002 with sp/3. Its the IE7
application(s) thats not responding and the iexplore.exe thats taking 99% of the cpu. Its
funny because any saved favorites will open
just fine. Its only when I try and open the
IE shortcut icon that's causing this problem.
Also when I try {start, run, "iexplore.exe"}
I get the same result, it locks up.

What happens when you run without addons? answer

by CAMUSED In reply to What happens when you run ...

I get the same results, I try to open IE7,
taskmgr shows 1 process (iexplore.exe taking
99% of cpu) and (2 IE apps not responding)

What I dont understand is why I can open IE7
websites from the favorites with no prolem? If there is a problem with IE7 wouldnt it not
work at all?

It's possible then

by Slayer_ In reply to Odd question but whats yo ...

I have had MSN crash my browser many times before. Which is irritating when it's the default homepage for IE4, 5 and 6, even though all 3 browsers tend to crash when you visit MSN. I wouldn't be surprised if IE7 now has issues as well. Try changing your homepage to "about.blank" or click the "Use Blank" button.

Thanks SinisterSlay,
I changed my homepage to Google and that seems to have fixed the problem. Now that I
think of it, my problem started about the same time that MSN changed their webpage.

I have 2 other computers all the same hardware, software, and apps: why didnt affect the other 2 machines?

I just know it happened to me as well. Partially why I switched to Orca browser, I was getting sick of stupid glitches like that.
Don't forget to give thumbs up to those answers that helped.
