IE8 not working. Do I have a virus / Trojan ?

By mick.roche ·
A user in our company periodically reports that his internet explorer is not working. Nothing happens when he opens the icon. The only way to get it working again is to use system restore. The problem happened again today. I called up to his office and his pc was sluggish and was becoming unresponsive when trying to print or remove software through Add/ Remove Programs He also advised today that he could not access the google internet site at all. I carried out a system restore and everything seems ok again now apart from accessing google. I have found that the only way he can access google is by using the ip address. There are no entries for Google in the Hosts file . No other user in our site is reporting the same issues. We are using Mcafee Virussscan Enterprise and antispyware edition version 8.8 and he has the latest DAT files installed. All Windows updates are up to date . Win XP SP3 client ? Does anybody know of any reliable free scanner/ virus remover I can use to further test for viruses/ spyware/trojans/etc ? Or can anybody offer any different theories as to what is going on ?

run Rkill onthe system, then run malware bytes and do a full scan.

also make sure the internet options dont show a proxys server or auto exect connect selection

you can also boot from a trk (trinity rescue kit) cd and do a 3 antivirus scan.
