That it is not a good idea to install it.

While trying out performance enchancements to a 98 machine. I finally got the CD drive to work again. So I tried sticking in my 4 month old ubuntu live CD left over from my last attempt.

here are some bench marks:
Time till desktop was visible:
25 minutes
Time to click a menu and have it load and be visible:
3 minutes
[I did not bother to do anything else after this point]
Time to shutdown:
8 minutes (It did not successfully shutdown, it hung after asking me to remove the CD)

The system is a 350mhz P2 with MMX.
8 mb video card, AGP.
256 MB of RAM.
32X CD drive.

So is this a good indication that the OS is wrong for this system? or is it purely CD lag?

I got similar results on an older system that I tried Ubuntu on, and similar Live CD sloth, and after the install, found it to be even slower than the Live CD.

FYI I am looking for OS alternatives as Windows 98 is utterly painful to use. And there are no XP drivers for the system, so Linux seems like the obvious choice.
