If you have windows-privacy-protection.com or related spyware

By sfogel ·
I have received so much wonderful information from this site i wanted to give back with something i havent found anyone to mention about the malware of and associated with windows-privacy-protection.com. I came accross a client's PC infected with this and a bunch more including Smitfraud.c and Zlob. The task manager was "greyed out" and i tried many times to correct this through the registry and other utilities. This particular system was running win XP home so there is no gpedit. I tried using spybot, and a few other choices including combofix, tried safe mode, tried pretty much everything i could find. No new software or websites that had any relation to an antivirus company would load. I looked up the same problems i was having and most people said they had to format. This was not a great option for this client. After fooling with this for a long time i tried something that i didnt think wopuld work. All AV programs and utils would stop responding after execution. I changed the name of combofix.exe and i also checked the properties to make sure there was no mention of it. I did the same with spybot. Unbelievably, the program started running. It seems the limitations imposed were name-based. Not sure if this will help anyone but it sure helped me. I havent seen this idea posted on any blogs around, although im sure i cant be the only one to think of this. I just wanted to mention this in case someone else is having some frustration like i did.
