IIS5 probs after Win2k SP1+encrpyt. pack

By bsamson ·
Plea: I've been having a real **** of a time figuring out what's going on with IIS after installing the Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 and High Encription Pack.

Does anyone have any insights?

System: P3 500Mhz, 128MB RAM, Win2k Professional, 5+GB available, no previous problems or issues.

Short Description:
After installing the Win2k High Encryption Pack and Win2k Service Pack 1, IIS services no longer respond. The MMC is also dead, not even showing the splash screen. Rolling back service pack changes didn't help, and uninstalling IIS bombed as well.

Long Description:
I'm limited to 1930 characted on this board, so please review http://users.sarkcincinnati.com/bsamson/iis_probs.html for a complete description, including all the error logs that get generated.

Many thanks for anyone who could help me get IIS5 back up!

Brian

IIS5 probs after Win2k SP1+encrpyt. pack

Based upon the details on your web page you need to re-install the high encryption pack. After fixing the reboot problem you re-installed the service pack but the high encryption pack has to be re-installed.
That may kick IIS and get it started. If not make sure you turn IIS off for automatic start and try removing it that way.
Hope this helps..

ITGuru,
I wish there was a rating for "Acceptable - Helped me, but not quite there yet". I've been able to pull a heartbeat out of IIS, which is to say that I can now pull the default web page up.

However, I still can't pull up the MMC. The process just sits there without bringing up the splash screen. I also determined that Visual Interdev hangs on accessing the web as well.

This is where the soup gets thicker, because I have no extra errors to work off of, and no log files that I can find. Also, I tried stopping the service in Component Manager and received a timeout error, saying the components didn't respond, and therefore weren't verified as stopped. Any thoughts?

I would use a nice utility like filemon or regmon available from www.sysinternals.com to see what mmc is doing or waiting for. To use run filemon then mmc. You'll see the results. This isnt an answer, just some help to maybe help yourself.

Again, this comment helped me quite a bit, but didn't solve my problem. Thanks for the REAL cool system utilities site, though! I used FileMon and RegMon to watch the InetInfo and MMC processes. Nothing seemed to get hung or fail. Oddest thing.
