illegal operation as desktop loads

this problem can be caused by any of the following; installing HP JetAdmin service, a corrupted file in IBM ViaVoice, installing windows from your hard drive rather than the cdrom, installing software known as NetMeter or installing Compuserv and then not completely uninstalling it. you can find the solutions to these problems by going to microsoft.com and clicking on support, then knowledge base, then type your error message and click go.

Run your system file checker then extract the corrupted file from your installation cd.

Your question is pretty vague! You also don't give much information. What O/S, what programs do you have loading on startup, will it start in safe mode?

1st thing start the system in Safe Mode. In Win '98 Hold the CTRL as the machine is starting. When the menu option comes up Select 3 Safe Mode Hit Enter. In Win '95 use F8 to get to the Options Menu, then Select 3 Safe Mode. If the system lets you into Windows to your Desktop check the Startup Group in the menu and remove anything that is loading. If you are running any AntiVirus software ie., Norton or McAfee go into the programs and Disable Auto Protect and any other features they may have. Once you are sure all these programs will not run do a proper restart of your system. Click, Start, Shut Down, Select RESTART MY COMPUTER, Click OK. If you have disable these programs properly the system should let you into Windows and then you can check which program is causing the problem. You can then uninstall then reinstall that damaged software. AntiVirus software often causes this problem. So much so its' usually the 1st thing I look at.
