I'm using Excel 2007 I need to keep formatting to text

I know about protecting the worksheet which would work if I didn't need to use the text to column feature. Excel changes 12-** to general formatting giving me a number I don't want. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just format the entire column or row

Apply whichever formatting style you want to all cells requiring the formatting. If done by row or column, the formatting should follow along as new columns/rows are appended to the existing sheet.
