The IMCDATA directory ( E:\exchsrvr\imcdata ) in the exchange server 5.5 is around 2.5 gig and my hard disk is about full.
1. Is there a way to clear this ? if so please give me the step by step instructions.

2. can the files in the directorybe deleted ?

3.Please give me few basic tips to maintain and administer the exchange server 5.5 .

Please reply

DONT do it!!!!!
i`m sorry that i don`t have the space here to explain the data directory structure of exchange to you ....need more space ..

the IMCDATA direcorty is for the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) if you have external e-mail DO NOT Deletethis (V BAD)...
before you do anything check the link
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/55/whpprs/sysadmin.htm
White paper on sys admin
then buy a GOOD book like SYBEX MCSE exchange 5.5 study guide ..this will cover basics then buy O`reillys exchange 5.5 admin guide (V.good)
THEN maybe delete directory......but backup first

Joel - the IMC directory is maintaining logs of activity through the Internet Mail Service connector. Although I have been administering Exchange Server for some time, I have the same question that you have. I have searched Microsoft TechNet and other literature and found nothing specifically relating to the IMC logs. Apparently these logs do not get automatically purged after a backup and therefore they build up over time. I have access to free MS technical support and I am going to ask them this question. I'd be glad to share any answers I get from them and a few general tips on managing/purging logs and databases in Exchange with you if you want to email me directly at synergy@synoffsys.com.

It is safe to delete the contents in \exchsrvr\imcdata\in\archive and \exchsrvr\imcdata\out\archive. I know of no way to clear this automatically within exchange. You can always write a batch file, i.e. use command del e:\exchsrvr\imcdata\in\archive\* and run it automatically using the NT schedule service, i.e. at or winat. Depending on how much Internet mail is being sent and received, you should delete the contents of the archive folder as it can grow quickly. Each file you see in archiveis a message that has been sent or received by the ims.
