Impact of “Napstering” on Network?

by scm . Updated 25 years, 8 months ago

Hi,
I’m the PC Tech Support/Network Admin person for a small graphics design company (~60 users) in a mixed Mac/PC NT4, 100Base, ADSL network.

I’ve been reading various articles on bandwidth hogging, etc, and I’m just wondering if there have been any published studies or reports on the effect that using programs like Napster and Scour have on network performance. I’ve been noticing random degradation in speed and general performance in users’ abilities to download email from our ISP’s POP3 mail server, as well as users’ abilities to process data across the internal network, something we’ve never had such noticeable problems with before. I think I might be noticing a possible link between this degradation and a pocket of users downloading (I call it Napstering) music….but I need more proof before I can bring it up as an issue in this particular environment.

I’ve been scouring the Internet, but so far, no conclusive results. Any suggestions on where to go for more information?

Thanks,
SCM
