Implementing File auditing

By saxasurfer ·
We want to implement File auditing on a Win2k3 server. Theres 50Gb of data in the main directory then 4 shares within it with different permissions.

Main problem is that we don't know how long its going to take for the auditing settings to apply down to child objects and we need to know so we can plan for it to be done OOH.

Anyone got any experience of this or similar?

The setting on the server, wait 15 mins then access a file on the server from another machine not the server it's self.

Then go check the Audit logs, hope this helps.

Also how many people will be accessing this servers files, the log file may fill up and use space on the hard drive very fast.

Delays

by saxasurfer In reply to Replicate

When we apply the auditing settings then select to replace the audit settings on all child objects would we expect to see similar delay propogating down as you get when making changes to permissions and applying them to child objects?

Theres 21000 folders containing 188000 files.

Thanks in advance

WOW

now your talking i never knew it was for that many folder and files.

This is the way i would do it i would run the aduit on one folder with all the files in it and any sub folders, see how long it takes to do. I would then times this by the amount of folders you have then you no what sort of downtime your talking about and what you can manage maybe do it over a few days or weeks?
