Importing Favorites

By Sue T ·
When I try to import favorites it looks like it runs ok but then when I look in Favorites it has not imported or replaced anything. I got this to work on one computer and the only difference is this computer did not get Windows Updates done this year and all the others did. Is it something in the updates that is causing this problem and if so how do I fix it. I cannot find anything on Microsoft's site about this problem. The computers are running Windows 98se and Internet Explorer 6 sp1.

First off, what are you trying to import favorites from and to. On win98 the favorites are stored in the Favorites folder under wherever you have windows installed (usually c:\windows). If you have the pc setup for multiple users then the favorites will be under the user's directory under Profiles (pretty sure).

Have you installed a different web browser and are trying to import from the old one?

Post back with more info.

Cheers.

All computers are identical in hardware and software with the exception of the one computer that did not get windows updates this year.(this is also the computer that did not have a problem importing Favorites). Computers use only IE for browsing, no other browser is installed and we are using IEs import/export favorites menu option. PCs are setup for one user only.

maybe you restored the favorites to the wrong profile. did you try this: make a new favorite: call it MYTEST. then search for MYTEST and see what profile/location it's getting stored in. then simply copy over the favorites you want into that folder.

There aren't profiles setup on the computers and it did work on one of them, the one that did not get windows updates this year. This has to happen on over 75 computers and it worked fine until windows updates were done.

Where are you importing from, an address or a file? The easiest way to import is to just copy the contents of the favorites folder from one location to another.

Poster rated this answer.I am importing from the bookmark file on a floppy and since users are doing this and not me the best way is for them to use the import feature in Internet Explorer otherwise there will be some who copy it to the wrong place and then be upset when they cannot find those bookmarks in the favorites in Internet Explorer.

This should work at best: Copy the Favorites Folder place it on the desktop > now open IE >
Resize the Browser (resize explained later)> Now open up the Favorite from IEs ( the Favorites with the star)now it should be on the left side of your browser> Locate the Favorites Folder on the desktop drag it to the expaned Favorites where ever you want it to be placed in the list of Favorites. The reason behind the resize of the browser is so you can easily grab the FF for drag and drop.

Poster rated this answer. I already know how to do this but this does not solve the problem as there are 75 computers this has to happen to and this is too time consuming. We never had this problem before and I am trying to find out why we are having it now.

do users log into a domain? is the domain win2k server or win2003 server? better look into group policy. is the group policy determine user's internet explorer settings upon log on to server?

They do not log into a domain and there are no group policies in effect either locally or thru a server. We do have a NT4 server that the computers have access to for backing up, is it possible to put the favorites we want on the server and then when people log on to back up have the server automatically replace the favorites on the workstations with the ones we have on the server? If this is possible how would I go about doing it? Poster rated this answer.
