In over my head, help! (Cisco)

by malekish . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

I hope someone can help bail me out, I got myself into a bit of a pickle at work.

Current configuration: Cisco 1841 router –> Linksys 24 port switch.

All ports are full on the switch, we wanted to add another switch that was here so we could wire some new offices. I looked at the current setup (being the geekiest guy here, 18 employees) and said it shouldn’t be too hard, right? (famous last words).

New switch is Cisco 2950 24 port switch. I was hoping I could just bring up a web interface like the Linksys and configure it, there’s a ton of stuff I don’t understand on the Linksys but the core guts of it work like my home router.

I’ve found how to access the CLI via console, and have followed the initial setup screen but I can’t do anything past that, I plug in my laptop to port 1 on the Cisco and don’t get an IP address, can’t reach the web, etc.

What do I need to do next? This doesn’t have to be complex, the first switch is giving addresses in 192.168.0.xxx and this one can be 192.168.1.xxx (or would that not work?)
