inconsistant IE components

By bytor ·
I have installed a 5.0 component (ADVPACK.DLL) into my IE 5.5. This prevents me from accessing WINDOWSUPDATE and IE repair will not work. I cannot go back to a previous version. What are my options to repair Internet Explorer?

Windows 98 SE does not contain an entry for the ierepair tool,98SE removes the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet tools option because it is intergrated with Windows 98 SE AND CANNOT BE UNINSTALLED
1)Reinstall IE 5,using the disk or iesetup
2)Reinstall the operating system using the CD-Rom only

I have been unable to reinstall IE5 from disk or iesetup. When I try iesetup it says it is corrupted and cannot continue.

Windows 98 Second Edition does not contain an entry for the ierepair
tool in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

Windows 98 Second Edition removes the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5
and Internet Tools option because Internet Explorer is integrated
with Windows 98 Second Edition and cannot be uninstalled
(the ierepair option is available only from the Internet Explorer 5
Uninstall dialog box) , or , Start>Run, key in msinfo32 and press
Enter. Click on Tools>IE Repair Tool .

Note , if you get the W98SE upgrade ( don't know about the update
version ) the repair feature is available .
