"Incorrect password or unknown username

By ddbaker ·
Receiving the error "Incorrect password or unknown username for \\owacad02\C$" when executing MSDos prompt and a few other applications. This workstation has a new image that was copied from another workstation with a different computer name. I am thinking that the ownership still belongs to the workstation that the image was copied from. I need additional ideas. Do I change the ownership of all files in the directory system32? Imagecast is the imaging software.

Did you reset SID after you copy the image? NT network is define computer by SID not just by computer name. If you just copy the image from the other computer without change SID, you'll have big problem. You can't just change computer's name, some third party software can reset SID for you. Example, Ghostwalker from Norton Ghost. This utility allows you to reset all SID after cloning your HD.

A possibility is that some shortcut or so is referring to \\machine\c$. This sometimes happens with roaming profiles, or when putting an image back from another machine. In some cases shortcuts to C:\somewhere are converted to \\machine\c$\somewhere.
Find the shortcut (maybe the MS-DOS prompt PIF?) and your problem is fixed.
