Independents/SME’s versus Enterprises

Where can I find a precise budget breakdown that covers the full range of website costs? I’ll settle for breakdowns that fall in the 50-100k range. The examples must be equivalent to actual RFP’s and/or real life case studies.

SME’s can set up sites relatively easy: approx. 2/3 designers–freelance or inhouse
with respective hardware/software support–and the right hosting solution (modest monthly fee without dedicated).

Where do bigger costs factor in: quality of design (Tier 1 design companies)? Dedicating Hosting? ERP/CRM solutions? Consultancy fees? In-house salaries? Infrastructure?

The model to use for comparison is an independent content creator (or SME’s with one product or service) versus large enterprises. Independent content creators/providers can range from creators of entertainment content (songs, games, animations, eBooks)to web designers to information portals.

Some comparisons are obvious: enterprises with catalog offerings of products/servicesrequire serious and expensive ERP solutions.

If the goal is to market Direct-to-Consumer (meaning a product/service can be digitally purchased and delivered, aren’t content management solutions essentially the same–in theory–for an independent as they are for an enterprise?

Using Napster as an example of a large enterprise, the storage, maintenance and delivery of mega-gigabytes worth of mp3’s is going to cost more than a single artist/band selling a handful of mp3’s from a self-designed website.

The question concerning the above, is that in the global digital marketplace, doesn’t the independent content creator (SME’s) have an equal if not greater chance to minimize costs and increase ROI more than a larger enterprise?
