Information privacy and the CIO

Research indicates that companies who do more to protect customer privacy show increased profits. A rigorous information privacy policy is also being mandated more and more by regulators. But while information privacy is so important, rarely is IT in on the decision-making regarding it. This is certainly not the first area of business strategy that IT is left out of. What has been your experience?
