Inserting images in Word Document?

By daya_hs ·
Why does the file size increases when I insert a .jpeg image in a Microsoft word document? I want to be particular about the instance, I had a word file carrying 23 kb when the insert the .jpeg image to it, it became 1.03 mb but, the .jpeg file carries only 54 kb. Why does it happen so?

What happens is that Office converts the file format from JPEG to BMP. JPEG has a Much higher compression ratio than BMP therefore BMP files are larger and therefore you are getting an increase in the size of your document because it is storing the BMP image as well.

Actually EMF,PNG, GIF or Jpeg files are retained and a copy is made in WMF format. To fix this look at these URLs. The first is for W2K the second is for W97. They're essentially the same.
