inspiron 4100 drive install

By matt.hopkins ·
My OEM hard drive took a dive and I bought a new 80GB toshiba to replace it. As I understood it, the OS on the system would automatically "see" the new drive, but when I put in my XP home edition disc it says no hard drive is found, what do I need to do?

Is it a brand new drive?

Did the Toshiba drive come with software? Sometimes this software has to be installed first.

Did you update the BIOS on the laptop? You made need a BIOS upgrade to be able to read this drive.

Have you checked the BIOS settings? The drive will need to be recognized in the BIOS before the XP installation CD will find it.
