Install disks needed

By Dr. After ·
I have a charter school that have been donated about 40 computers from Lockheed. They all have the windows 98 COA on the boxes, but the HDD were wiped clean. I was informed from Microsoft that because the COA is still on there and the are donated to a school, that I should be able to install any OS on these without a hitch. The only problem is, I have no windows 98 CD's. I think I might have one 2000 CD, but have a few XP cd's. So I started with the XP ones, but it turns out XP is CD specific with it's registry keys and I don't have one XP install CD that is registered to the school. From what I understand you can use any 2000 cd and enter whatever registration key for it. Which is what I need to do as the school does have a registered keys, just no install disks anywhere.

Any ideas on where to get extra install disks or how to handle this?

One way to do this with a Windows 2000 CD and all machines are the same hardware, is through a RIS install to all 40 machines. Create a .msi image of the Windows 2000 installation on a clean client, create an answer file with the CD Key and any other info that need to be manually entered during install, then deploy to all 40 machines via RIS.

Later on you can see if the school will spring for licenses [COA but no media] for multiple XP Pro installations.

All the machines differ in RAM, CD/DVD Drives, etc... by just a little. Also they are not currently in a location where they will be able to be networked. I would love to be able to do RIS, but not sure if it works in this situation.

Call Microsoft and ask for a donation of 40 licenses and install disks.

Got a number? ;-) I was in contact with their Fresh Start program for donated computers, but they don't cover any computers with processors faster then PII. All of these are PIII's. Are you saying that there may be another program or department I could speak with? I need to know something quick because we are running out of time here...
