Install Internal Eide HD with Existing Sata Operating Sys HD

By timothyjsmail-base1 ·
Hello -

New to this forum.

My experience is Mainframe - not entirely new to PC, but I'm finding this to be a challenge.

Recently purchased a Compaq Presario SR2032X, SATA HD 200 GB, Award Phoenix BIOS ver. 3.00.

I want to use my old storage HD (WD1200JB) as storage with this new Compaq. I installed the 120 GB drive internally without jumper. I revised the BIOS setting to boot from the SATA drive.
The drive was recognized within the BIOS and was recognized as an unassigned drive within WINXP computer management. At that point I reformatted my 120 drive and re-booted. This is the problem - the computer will reboot prior to showing the WinXP logon screen and other times it boots normally. I do not know why this behavior boot occurs and I do not know how to fix or override this issue. When the computer does reboot I get the F8 menu. When I select Windows XP it loads normally. I did contact HP about this and the guy I spoke to advised me to get an external setup, but I'm wiped out spending money as I've purchased two new computers inside of two months and I do need this extra HD. Any comments or suggestions most welcome. Thank you.

Which IDE channel did you attach

There is only 1 xtra PATA port in the box.
I tried jumpering it as master, slave and cable select. Each setup was not successful.
The only setup which was successful was no jumper setting.
I do not have the ability within the BIOS to reassign channels. The only change I am able to make is to assign boot order.
Am I giving you the info you need or am I not understanding what you're asking me to do? Thanks.

from HP/Compaq, your system has two IDE connectors on the system board. Please look at the system board picture in this link and see if it is the same as yours:

Yes, this is my board. The other PATA port is being used by the DVD drive. Should I switch the ports the DVD and HD are connected to?

Two devices

You can hook up two devices on each of the IDE interfaces with the appropriate cable. I'd hook up both the DVD drive and the HDD on the same cable.

Actually not a good idea

by w2ktechman In reply to Two devices

I have seen many problems with using cd/dvd on the same chain with a HDD.

Switching them is the best option. But I think the error is with the jumper setting on the drive. If it was set to master or cable select and connected as master (on the cable), the drive should be recognised fine.
Removing all of the jumpers, can cause errors and the drive not to be seen, or seen and then not work, etc.
Also, the drive could be flaky, or damaged by bad jumper settings. Look at the manufacturers website for your drive and the jumper settings. Sometimes you can destroy a drive by setting it incorrectly. It should also tell you what the setting will do if no jumper is present.
So, set it to master and make sure it is in the master (on the cable) as well. then try again.

P.S. -- you can get an external USB drive bay without a drive for $20

That was it! Drive recognized, booted perfectly, no slow-down or interference in operation of dvd drive.
Thankyou very much for working with me on this.
