Install program starts every boot up

By NateH ·
Hi all. I am working on a friend's computer that apparently was hit by some sort of virus. I have managed to clean off most of the pop-ups and other symptoms, but one thing is still coming up.

Every time he boots, a program starts that says it is installing MS Office. It goes through the process and ends with no messages or problems. I can't figure out where this thing is getting kicked off. I have looked through the registry but nothing in the Run and Runonce keys. I have looked for batch files - nothing evident.

Any suggestions? ideas?

Try removing office from the system and reboot.

This is most likely due to a corrupt profile. Rebuild the profile and this will probably go away.

I'm with answer # 2. Sounds like office wants to install itself for the current profile. Then when the user logs off said profile isn't saved so next time the user logs on the process starts all over again.

I also see this when I set up a new computer, installing Office as an Administrator and then giving it to a non Administrator. As soon as they start Word or Excel the installer comes up. If you wait until it asks for the CDROM and cancel it works. Iv'e found it's just easier to install it as the user who will be using it and login as Workstation Administrator.
More M$ Pain.
