Install upgrade from NT4 to XP

By margarita ·
When upgrading from NT 4.0 to XP, can you retain some NT tools. Specifically, XP does not have Microsoft Binder. NT automatically installs with Office Suite. 2000 installs as a separate tool. Can you install Binder from an earlier platform?

Well, you can run Office 2000 on XP, so I would imagine you could do a Custom Install of Office, and select only Binder to install. That should work, but I have not tested it.

I would start by tring either or both of these options;

Install XP in a dual boot configuration, and use the files and settings transfer wizzard to transfer over your NT settings.

Install XP on a seperate PC. Use the file and settings transferwizzard to port over the NT settings from your PC.

Overall, I would be hesitant to just upgrade the NT installation.
While I haven't heard of any issues with an NT upgrade, most users upgradeing from W98 or Me have had problems, and had to format and start over.
I have only performed "clean" installs myself.

The Dual-Boot option would also allow you to ease into XP.
