Install - Win2k fails after precopy

By dirtycar74 ·
I have tried multiple configurations.
I have tried multiple HDD.
I have tried different RAM sticks.
I have tried different OS (Win9x-WinXP).
All fail at about the same spot: after the inital pre-copy. For Win2k, the failure occris at "Setup is starting windows 2000". For Win9x (includes ME), the failure occurs at scandisk. The HDD I have tried in other, working machines, and am able to read/write to the drives with no problem. Only on installation is there a problem. I think my problemis the controller on the motherboard, but just want to get someone else's thoughts as well. This is a new Intel D815EGEW Motherboard with an Inetl Pentium3 (933mhz) and 256Mb SDRAM (2 sticks of 128Mb). The HDD I *WANT* to install on is a 60Gb Western Digital EIDE/ATA100 Drive. Everything peripheral (ethernet/sound/video/USB) is built into the motherboard, so there is less likely to be a component IRQ conflict, unless there's something else going on as well (IMHO). Just looking for some other point of view as to what I could focus my attention on next... Thanks in advance.

Install - Win2k fails after precopy

by dirtycar74 In reply to Install - Win2k fails aft ...

I have also tried creating partitions on a known working machine and using both NTFS and FAT32. the drive gets the FS, but still won't install the OS. DOS 6.x was working on a smaller HD (an OLD AT drive, much too small to install any current OS on) with no problems - this is what made me think of the HDD controller. Perhaps it has to do with the speed at which the data is being transferred to and from the drive? If I am barking up the wrong tree, I hope someone here can point me in the right direction... thanks again...

Hi,

Two other things to try :

1. Make sure you're using the lastest BIOS revision.

2. Specifically supply the drivers for your HD controller at the early stage of the boot when it asks you for additional drivers (for XP).

Cheers,
Tim.

I fixed it myself - the heat sink was defunkt. Replacing that solved the issue. At some point prior, I actually thought it was acting as if it were overheating, but then thought that it would fail more severely. I should have taken that hunch andgone with it sooner. Thanks though.
