By gogrimehul ·
I HAVE 2 HARDDISKS HDD1 AND HDD2 BOTH 80gb,P4 2.4GHz INTEL CHIP AND 845GVSR INTEL MOTHERBOARD,256MB RAM...HDD1 IS MASTER AND HDD2 IS SLAVE...BOTH HAD WINDOWS BUT I TRIED TO DELETE DIRECTLY FROM HDD2 BUT SOME FILES REMAINED. THAT WAS OF NO BOTHER TO ME AS I USE HDD1 FOR WINDOWS. I HAVE WINDOWS XP SP2 ON HDD1. NOW THE PROBLEM OCCURRED WITH HDD1.IT ALWAYS RESTARTS AFTER THE WINDOWS LOGO.I TRIED TO FORMAT AND REPAIR THE WINDOWS BUT IT DOESNOT ALLOW ME TO DO SO. I TRIED TO CONNECT HARDDISK ON ANOTHER COMPUTER. IT USED TO SHOW UP IN BIOS BUT WHEN COMPUTER BOOTS UP WITH THE ORIGINAL HARDDISK ON THAT COMPUTER,DRIVES DOESNOT SHOW UP.LATER DECIDED TO INSTALL WINDOWS ON HDD2.CONNECTED IT TO ANOTHER COMPUTER AND FORMATTED THE C DRIVE ON IT.LATER TRIED TO INSTALL THE FRESH COPY OF WINDOWS ON HDD2,IT SAYS NTLDR IS MISSING BUT THERE IS NOT WINDOWS ON IT AND IT DOESNOT GO INTO THE WINDOWS SETUP OF BOOTABLE WINDOWS XP SP2 cd.I TRIED WITH 2 MORE DIFFERENT CD'S BUT OF NO USE.TRIED TO INSTALL THE WINDOWS ON HDD1 ON MY COMPUTER ITSELF IT GOES THROUGH WITH DETECTING HARDWARES AND VARIOUS THINGS FROM BOOTABLE WINDOWS XP CD BUT LATER SAYS PCI.SYS FILE IS MISSING AND SOME USB FILE MISSING..CAN U HELP ME OUT TO ATLEAST INSTALL THE WINDOWS ON ANY ONE OF THE HARDDISKS.
I'LL SUMMARIZE WHOLE THING ONCE AGAIN.
HDD1...WINDOWS XP SP2 WHICH I RUN..RESTARTS AFTER WINDOWS LOGO..TRIED ON ANOTHER COMPUTER..DOES NOT SHOW UP DRIVES..TRIED TO INSTALL REPAIR/FRESH COPY BUT SAYS PCI.SYS/ SOME USB FILES MISSING..

HDD2...HAD WINDOWS XP SP2 BUT TRIED TO DELETE IT DIRECTLY WHEN WORKING ON WINDOWS ON HDD1..DID NOT BOTHER...CONNECTED TO ANOTHER COMPUTER AND FORMATTED THE C DRIVE FROM IT...NOW TRYING TO INSTALL ON MY COMPUTER..FIRSTLY DOESNOT GO INTO SCANNING HARDWARES USING WINDOWS BOOTABLE CD AND LATER SAYS NTLDR IS MISSING.

I HAVE CHECKED RAM(WORKING GOOD),RESETTED BIOS SETTINGS...

ignore you. Second, questions go in the Questions area, not the discussion area.

This does sound like an issue with the hard drives. You need to prepare both hard drives. From what you've said, I assume both are IDE drives - if either or both are SATA, there is a slight difference in the instructions below.

A. Check the jumper settings on the hard drives, so one is set as Master on the Primary IDE circuit, and the other is set as Slave on either IDE circuit.

B. Set the CD / DVD player as Master on the secondary IDE circuit.

C. Check they show in BIOS.

D. Get a copy of Linux on a Live Disc and use it to:

1. Copy all important data of the hard drives onto a USB drive or DVD or a third drive.

2. Format both drives as one Primary Drive. Do this twice for each, and give them names.

3. Set the drive with the 'Master' jumper setting with a 'Boot' or 'Active' Flag.

E. Then shut the system down. If you have trouble with drive recognition when you reboot, remove the hard drive set as 'Slave.'

F. Reboot from the Windows disc and install onto the hard drive set as 'Master' on the Primary IDE circuit, this should be showing as Drive C.

This should give you a clean install on a clean drive. If any drive in a system is set with an 'Active' or 'Boot' flag and has a copy of the Windows boot files on it, it'll frequently try to boot the drive, regardless of all other instructions.

I still don't see a need for both text and cursive systems, but I retract my earlier position questioning the value of having both upper and lower case.
