Installation HP printer / NTVDM.EXE

By Ad_Pronk ·
Hello, I had two computers connected to each other by a router. A HP PSC 500 printer was connected to a HP Pavillion 7880 (serial port) and was also used by the other PC (AP)as a network printer. Both computers worked with Windows 2000 Prof. Because the PSC 500 was originally designed for Windows Me I had to download the correct drivers (originally the HP 7880 had Windows Me and the PSC 500 was notreally suited for Windows 2000). No problem untill the HP 7880 crashed (broken power supply) Because my children needed the printer for schoolwork, I moved the printer to the AP computer and connected it on the serial port, downloaded the correct drivers (as advised by HP)and then the trouble started. Extracting etc. went well but in the process of installing I get over and over again the message NTVDM.EXE has created an error; Windows will close this program; an error log is created (but I cann't find it). I followed the advise of HP service center by introducing shorter names for files etc but nothing helps. At last I reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro again from the beginning but the problem remain. Please help a desperate father because my kids need the printer really very hard. Nowadays the school "orders" that children poght to have these facilities at home

Looking forward for hopefully a real solution
Best regards

Just a thought but have you tried the add printer wizard instead of HP's install program? The driver files should be where you extracted the setup program for HP. Look for a file with an extension of .INF now using the Add Printer Wizard from Start-Settings-Printers, try to install the printer.
