installation of win 98 without disk

By memurf1 ·
Problem: I want to install a new hard drive along with the existing one and I don't have a Win 98 installation disk. Is it somehow possible to copy it (or whatever) over to the new hard drive from the old drive that has 98 on it?

You can create a startup disk from the Add/Remove Programs, select Windows Setup, insert floppy in Adrive and select the button to create startup disk
To install a new drive you will not need the disk at this juncture
Set the jumper on the drive to designate as slave, open the case and install the drive
Connect the cable with pin 1 to the outside
connect the power plug to drive
Once youu boot computer, press the key to open the CMOS panel ,check the configuration to make sure the drive is recognized,or use down arrow key to highlight and set to AUTO
save and exit

Hi,

Yep, soulriders instructions will allow you to put the new drive into your machine and make it usable, but you wont have transfered Win98 to it and you wont be able to boot from it...

You need to do soulrider's suggestions first... then...

To "swap to the new drive" you need to be able to copy the contents of your old drive across - boot sector and all...

There are a number of utilities that will do this for you. My preference is for Norton Ghost. Using that, you can "image the disk" across to the new one and all should be fine.

I believe you can also use Partition Magic 7.0 and there are others too. No doubt other people will post telling you of their favorites...

I've never tried the following but it may be possibleto

1. set up the disk as per soulrider's instructions.
2. copy the entire contents of Win98 from the old disk to the new. I'd do this from DOS using a bootable floppy, though.
3. Again from the floppy run fdisk /mbr against your new disk.
4. Remove the old disk and store it away for safekeeping in case it doesn't work...
5. Try it... and if its worked (but thoroughly test it!) then follow soulrider's instructions for your old disk if you want to add it back to your machine and keep usingit too.

This may just work, although as I said, I've never tried it...

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Tim.

Hi

First of all check your drives and see if you have and driectory such as c:\install or d:\win98cd. it may be the full win98 CD is copyied into any directory in your drives if you have this then you need the serial number or license number. For me it is doing a backup then restor mater if it its for the same hardwe if it is not then you need the drivers for your devices ready in case you need them.In the backup I would do a full backup of hard disk and backup the regisitry and the autoexec.bat, config.sys, and *.ini files in case of a Corruption.
pls read this ms article.

I know Western Digital hard drives come with a utility for copying drives that should make this job easy. You can also download it at there web site. Don't know for sure, but I would bet most other drive manufacturers have something similar.
