Installed programs. No Icons No execute

By alan.robinson14 ·
A new one on me. Every program that is installed from a CD completes successfully, BUT NO Icons and when I create an Icon to execute the program it, the hour glass appears then goes away, NOTHING.
When installing Office 97 Professional I get "Setupwas not Completed Successfully".

I have reinstalled Win95 after renaming "SYSTEM.DAT, USER.DAT, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI" to XSystem.dat etc. Hoping to obliterate the registery and rebuild it.

But same problem

Any ideas?

Alan

Oh, by the way. The PC is a Compac. and with so many bells and whistles I'm afraid to reformat and load from scratch.

Have you tried using a different CD to install Office 97? Can you run the executable from within the program directory itself? What kind of box are you installing this to? Is it generic, Compaq, etc.?

This is excerpted from MS Knowledge Base Article # Q168103

SYMPTOMS
After you reinstall Microsoft Office 97, Office icons are missing from the Windows 95 Start menu.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you do both of the following:
You run the Office 97 Setup program and click Run from CD.
-and-
You run the Office 97 Setup program again and click Reinstall.

WORKAROUND
To restore missing icons, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Remove and Reinstall Office
Run the Office 97 Setup program. When you are prompted to select a type of installation, click Remove All.

After Setup is finished, run the Setup program again and click Run from CD. This step installs Office again and all the program icons.

Method 2: Manually Create the Icons
Right-click the Windows 95 Start menu and click Open. Double-click the Programs folder.

On the File menu, point to New and click Shortcut. Click Browse, and then open the Office folder on the compact disc.

Click theOffice program for which you want to create a shortcut and click Open.

Click Next and type a name for the shortcut (for example, Microsoft Access), and then click Finish.

NOTE: By default, the programs for Office 97 are installed in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder.

Uninstall Office from the cd. After it is uninstalled go in to explorer\program files and delete the Microsoft Office folder.
Re start your computer and then reinstall office. This method has worked for me on a number of occasions, but only afterremoving the office folder. When you reinstall remember to select all in the custom instal.
Hope this helps.
