installed windows, graphics are terrible

By nomorepapers ·
I have an old compaq deskpro that had windows 95. I formatted the C drive and installed 98. The graphics are horrible. When I go to "display" in the control panel, under "color" it only lists two options: 2 color and 16 color. Under screen, it says "640x480" and the slider will not move to a higher option such as 600x800. I installed windows 98 on another old computer and the same thing happened. How do I fix this?

Check to see what graphics cards you have installed on the computer, then go to the manufacturers web site and download the software drivers to the graphics adapter
Use a floppy, use Device Manager and select the grphics card, select properties and then choose to Update Driver, once the driver are loaded then you can go to display and set the color

In addition to the graphics card driver.
Many graphics cards do not work optimally in Windows 98 without the chipset driver and DirectX installed.

To determine who made the chipset on the motherboard, use a tool such as Belarc advisor www.belarc.com or Sandra from Sisoft.com

Download the latest drivers for the chipset.
I recommend installing the chipset drivers, then DirectX, then the driver for the graphic card.

The latest version (8.1) of DirectX is available from Microsoft. You will also find it on the driver CD for many audio and graphics cards.

Usually all you need are drivers. To change them, goto www.compaq.com and download the drivers. then right click on the desktop, and select properties.

Then the advanced button on the settings tab, and then the adapter tab on that popup.

Then select change and 'follow the bouncing ball'
