installing 80GB hd onto PIII

By koko122333 ·
my hd failed so i got 80GB IDE hd and ultra ata controller card, installed the hardware and booted from w2k cd.
when it comes to the first question ".....to install press enter"
i press the enter and i am getting a message that it cant find a hard drive.
i remember had this kind of problem long time ago with 20gb hd. then i had to run fdisk and after that it found the hd and started to format it.
but i dont know what to do in this situation (80gb and controller card).
please your help
does the w2k install knows / ofers the option of fdisk?
thank you in advance

You will have to do the same thing. Check in the BIOS if the Mother Board detects the drive correctly. Boot from DOS/Windows floppy disks and partition the drive. Then format it and then install Windows.

Its likely Win2k can't see the controller card. Or more to the point, doesn't have drivers included on the Windows 2k CD.

You would need to press F6 during the first part of boot, and add the ATA card controller drives using a Floppy Disk.

Windows 2000 itself doesn't use the DOS based FDisk utility, rather it uses a GUI based disk manager. This has all the functionality required to sort out and partition the disk.

Most likely you BIOS won't support a drive larger than 32GB check and see if there are any bios updates avail for your MB bios, be very careful and follow all bios update directions carefully as an error could leave you system unusable.

One way to know for sure if your computer is recognizing the hard drive or the controller card already is to boot from a Win 98 boot disk and try to access c: (hard drive). If c is said to be invalid or not exist, then you have not properly installed either the controller card or the hard drive (most likely the controller card). If the c prompt displays, use the fdisk command then format the disk. Once the format completes, you will have a win32 partition. Restart the computer and this time when the Win 2000 installation loads, it should detect a FAT32 partition which you can upgrade to NTFS. If hard drive is still not detected by Win 2000 setup, the hard drive or controller card are not installed correctly!
