Installing another Hard Drive in Netware

By ZakM ·
We have a compaq proliant 3000 server with hot plug drives.
We have installed the drive, Netware recognises that a drive has been installed.

We are running Netware 4.11.

How do you add the new drive to an existing volume.

I have done this before , but cannot remember how, it was such a long time ago.

Installing another Hard Drive in Netware

Hi Zak,

Easy, but well hidden, I can imagine you don't recall everything.
So the drive is recognised by the server?
-LOAD INSTALL. Select Disk Options | Modify Disk partitions. Select your disk, create a partition (the entire space I presume), and press Esc.
-Still in Install. Volume Options this time. Select the volume you want to expand, and press F3. Select Free Space, and press enter. Confirm you want to add it.

And that should be it. This can be done live, your users won't notice it.

Jim

If the current drives are Raid 5. Use the cpqonlin utility. This will allow you to add the drive to the raid setup. Without desroying the raid. If you add the drive to the volume from the Novell menu, it will not be part of the raid setup.

Souse cpqonlin to add the dive to the raid first, then add the space from that drive to the volume using the netware menus.

Load install.nlm
Select Disk Options / Modify disk partitions
The new disk should be there as disk 2
Select the new disk and create a netware partition (Size= the total lenght of HD)
Defalut options will be okay.
The go to "Volume Options" , press insert, select the some space from the new netware partition.
Then mount the volume

Hoipe it helps

You have probably already done this, but just in case...Consider if you really want the volume to span the drives. When we lost a drive and the volume spanned 2 drives including the dead one, we effectively lost the data on both drives. The CNA that helped us couldn't even save the data with the mirrored drives. We had to resort to the tape backup and the whole thing was a weekend-long mess.
