Installing hard drive

By egsiegmund ·
I attempted to install a Maxtor 7200rpm 40 Gb drive but my system refuses to recognize its presence. The processor is an AMD-K6 2/400Hz.

Check the jumper settings on the HD. If you system supports it you can set it on cable select. If not then use master for one HD and slave if it is the second HD in the system.

It could also be the cable or your system does not support the 7200rpm drive. Check for a bios update for your motherboard.

Start with these options and comment back if it still does not work.

Check the bus speed of the HD (ATA66, 100, 133) That is most likely your problem. You will need a BIOS upgrade or a new Motherboard.

Some mother boards and some hard drives do not work well together.

Have you tried having just the new drive connected and jumpered for single drive?

If the drive is still not detected, your best option is to buy a PCI slot IDE controller card.

For under $30, not only will the new drive be recognized, but you will get the full ATA100 or ATA133 data transfer rate.

Although I did not try a PCI Controller card that probably would have solved my proble also. I upgraded my BIOS from the mfr. to solve the problem.

check the jumper settings, then boot, goto setup set the primary master to 'auto',so that it will automatically detect when you boot then exit setup.or you could set it as 'user' then go to ide hard disk detection(still on setup),and detect the hd manually.
