Installing new system

By Borg7of9 ·
I often have to install new systems, say home installs. The first thing I do is update virus definitions, install zone alarm, and do critical updates. However, now it takes about 30 seconds for a system to get infected when connecting to high speed, so I am in a catch 22, as I need the internet to update software, but cant connect until I am secure. Any suggestions? I am always onsite, so I cant for example always do this behind a firewall. I use norton, and also wondered if there is a way to get the virus definitions from a secure system to update a new system. If so, how?

What you need to do is from a secure place to download the antivirus updates (from norton) and the windows updates (http://tinyurl.com/gh3o) and + service packs for the windows os's. burn those on a cd and when you are installing your system before connecting to the internet update the system via the pacthes on the cdrom.

Thanks, what I can not figure out how to do is download the definitions and transfer them? Do you know how. In fact if I have an updates system, I should just be able to copy, I just dont know the procedure?

you mean turning on the XP firewall does not protect you while you get the critical updates?
to do nortons from safe computer for transfer to another, is easy. download intelligent updater from symantec.com burn it on cd and just run it on new computer. or if for some reason you want to update defs manually, extract them first from the intelligent updater with the /dump switch. (if intelligent updater file was named 100303intel.exe, you would type '100303intel.exe /dump' see? then copy those files folders to 'incoming' folder. search for it, probably program files\application common data\symantec\norton antivirus\defs\incoming. or somehting like that. put defs in there and then reboot and norton will incorporate them. this is all written up in read me.txt found at very end of article about intelligent updater...
i bring my new computers back to 'lab' and put behind router/firewall for all this stuff.

Do you own a cd-burner? Then burn the latest available copy of zone alarm to cd and before you wire them up, intall zone alarm from the cd.
