Installing Server 5

By nettech ·
I am preparing to study for my CNA and I have the educational version of Netware 5 Server. I am trying to install and I get as far as the drivers for the hard drive and NIC. I have a PC 100 montherboard and an Western Digital 4.8 gig hard drive. I have both the CD Rom and the Hard Drive on the same ribbon cable and the Novell sees the CD rom but I cannot get the generic HAM file and CDM to work with the hard drive- it continually tells me to use the appropriate HAM and CDM file- where can I find drivers?

You did already make at least a 50MB Dos partition, Right? You are not trying to boot directly to the CD, Right? Make sure you have created a bootable DOS partion and set it up with your CD-ROM DOS drivers to load in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. If this is not the case try putting your CD-ROM on the secondary IDE channel. Don't forget change the CD from slave to master when you do this. You should not have this problem unless you have some unsupported MB chipset.

Also make sure that your entire hard disk is not already set up with DOS or Extended DOS partitions. There must be free space on the hard disk for netWare to create its NetWare partition where the volumes will be placed. As an example, you may wish to use FDISK to create and format a 2GB DOS partition on the disk. Then during the NetWare5 install, there will be about 2.8 GB for the NetWare partition, where you could set up a 1.8 GB SYS volume, a 500 MB DATA volume and a 500 MB MAIL volume for training purposes. (On a dedicated server, your DOS partition would only need to be a 100 MB or so, but I assume you may want to use the computer for other purposes while training.)
