installing Win 98SE

By karthik_mynam ·
I am presently running on 'Win Xp Professional', now I want to remove 'Win Xp Professional' and install Win 98SE. I have got a bootable Cd but it does not boot when my system starts with the CD. I had also changed my BIOS setting to CD-ROM as my first priority for booting.

Can anyone help me out ?

Get the bootable diskette from bootdisk.com or get a startup disk from someone you know with a working win98 system. You'll probably need to fdisk your harddrive and if your drive is larger than 32gig you may have problems seeing it all. Check your drive manufacturer for tools to see the entire drive, IBM.COM has pointers to ontracks software to handle this, Maxtor and Western digital have theirs as well.
Good Luck

As far as I know, Windows 2000 and Me were the first to have bootable CDs.

For a W98 CD to be bootable, it would need to be a custom CD.

You need a W98 startup disk.
This can be downloaded from www.bootdisk.com, or created on any functioning W98 system from add/remove programs.

If your system is running you can browse the Win98 se CD and make a Start Up disk from it.

You need a bootable win98 diskette. Than Fdisk if the file system is NTFS. Delete partitions, than re create the partition. Format than use the win98 bootable diskette to boot with cd support. Copy Win98 dir from cd to c:\win98 dir. Once copied go to c:\win98 and type setup.
To copy use the xcopy e:\win98 c:\win98. If E: is your cdrom since may be your ram drive. It will ask you if directory or file, chose directory. HTH
