Installing win xp

By rickporritt35 ·
I currently have win ME on my pc. When I insert the disk for win xp (home ed) it does not allow me to upgrade. What is the simplest option for installing xp in this case?

the best way is to do a clean install.

that means erasing the hard drive so you would need to backup any files that you want to save.

And it means re-installing all your programs again.

But this does work better and gets rid of a lot of "garbage" and "unused" files on your system.

If you erase your hard drive, when you put your XP disk in for install it will ask for your Win ME disk.If you do not have the ME disk XP will not install.

Hope this helps

Thanks so far. But how do I erase drive C. If I try to format it, that doesn't work - it says that windows is using the files. Do I do this in the BIOS or DOS or how?

I would boot to my handy dandy Win 98 Emergency Boot disk and use that to Format C then boot from CD to the Win XP disc and load it.

BTW WIn XP Pro leaves Win XP Home for dead, if you can try and swap it up. Home has a number of issues that pro does not. Running Java being the most obvious, every Win XP Home installation I have seen has needed to go to www.sun.com to get the latest set of Java drivers to be able to see any Java on the web.
