Installing Windows 8?

By jern46 ·
I'm not totally illiterate when it comes to an OS, but how do I install the Win 8 beta and not screw up my Windows 7? Is there an easy way to do this or do you install on another partition or external drive or ??? Thank you.

Jerry

It all depends on what you have available here

But you can not install 8 inside Windows 7 you need to install it to another Partition/HDD or if you have a high enough version of 7 you can run it as a Virtual Machine from inside 7.

Personally I would suggest removing the HDD with 7 on it and fitting another HDD and Install 8 Beta to that as you do not want to mess with the current install of 7 which will result in a Dual Boot Configuration and you'll always get the Option to Chose which OS you want to boot into when you first turn the computer on.

Even better it would be great if you could install 8 on another computer all together so that you have no chance of doing any damage to your current OS.

If you read the Warnings that came with the Beta Version of 8 it clearly tells you that this is a Preproduction Release which may not work very well and you should not use in a Environment where reliability is required.

However if you are fine with needing to edit thew Boot Loader or reinstall 7 latter you can install to a different Partition/HDD to what 7 is loaded to but that partition/HDD should not have anything on it.

You should also backup all your Important Data & Settings so as you can recover if something goes wrong when you attempt to install 8.

Installing Windows8

by jimdoss In reply to Installing Windows 8?

I recommend finding an old laptop at an estate sale, you can usually get one with 1gb of memoery and enough speed for under $100. You can then install what ever you want on it without messing up your working computer. I have had, XP, Server 2003 while is was studying for MCSA, RedHat, Fedora, Windows 7, Windows 8 Developer and now Window 8 CP. It's like getting a new computer every couple of months.

I shrank the tiles on the Metro UI and it's not really that much different than short cuts on a desktop.
Have fun with it.
