installing windows95/98

By Jeeper ·
While trying to install windows 95 or 98, The computer will hang at the screen that says "Copying files needed for windows setup" I have swapped out the video card, hard drive and the ribbon, and the memory. I have no other card in the computer, I have even removed the cdrom. The only thing left is a video card, floppy, and hard drive. Still the same problem. I have also reseated the CPU. It is an intel 233 MMX on a common Matsonic motherboard. The computer started having problems booting into windows 98, it would just hang. I decided to reload, and came up with this problem. Can anyone help?

Something residual on your hard drive is conflicting your setup. Go to control panel / add/remove programs and click on the 'startup disk' tab. Make the startup disk. Open Explorer and copy FORMAT and FDISK to the floppy - they can be found in c:/windows/command. Shut down and reboot from the floppy. Choose the "CD support" boot option. From DOS, change to the CD-ROM drive (type x: then Enter - x is the drive designation). Then, type DIR and Enter. You should see the DIRectory of the CD in the CDR drive. There should be a file named INSTALL or SETUP - if you can't see all the files, type DIR /W then Enter. Type SETUP (or INSTALL) and hit Enter. This should work.

If not, you may have to reboot from that floppy and reformat yourhard drive. NOTE: this will wipe everything on your hard drive. So, back up your data first. To Reformat, boot from the floppy and type FORMAT C: then Enter. Let it do the format, then reboot from the floppy, change to the CD Drive (as before) and SETUP or INSTALL (as before).

Hi it seems that you are quite well with installing win 95/98. I have only one suggestion for you that you check your VGA card it's loose connected or not. Or you can remove the card and place that correctly.
Than try to install win95/98. Hope thiswill solve your problem.

If you had win98 installed and using fat32,it will not load win95,without a full version of 95 and then you will have to FDISK /MBR to clear the master boot record then try you formatting and install of win98.

I have swapped out yet another hard drive, and keyboard. I have found the problem being the mouse plug. It has now been repaired and back in working order. Thanks for all the help!
