Installing Windows98 with NO CD-ROM!!!

By PeeJay ·
Here's my Problem:

I formatted my PC and I want to freshly install Windows98 SE on it. Well, I formatted everything and I put the Windows98 SE boot disk in and everything was working like it's supposed to. Then, after I tried accessing the CD-ROM to run the setup.exe file from the CD, it appears that I don't have the DOS drivers for my CD-ROM so I'm stuck and I can't access the CD-ROM. Is there any way I can install Windows98 over the network or something because I am on a network? Or can someone please help me with an answer? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

Check the site www.bootdisk.com for boot disk that includes mscdex for cd-rom drivers

I ended up replacing the CD-ROM and it worked.. Apparently, the drive was bad because after I did that everything worked fine. Thanks.

Did you use a bootdisk, or a startup disk?

A DOS bootdisk does not include the CD drivers.
The startup disk does.

What I do, is temporarily mount the hard drive in another PC, and copy the W98 CD onto the hard drive.
Use a DOS pathname (8 standard characters) for the folder name.
Many people use C:\WIN98
I often use C:\Windows\Options
(that was the folder on the first PC I came across with the CD copied to the hard drive)

One advantage of doing this, is that you NEVER need the W98CD to install drivers or network protocols.
