Installing WinXP Pro over WinME

By Gregg S ·
My PC with WinME has gone "bonkers"--I have tried reinstalling ME, but it only partially works. So,I would like to install WinXP Pro on the PC--not upgrade to it, but do a complete install. Can I merely rename the Windows folder and then do an install? Or is my only alternative to reformat the drive and then do a clean install?

Reformat and do a clean install.

Be advised, however, that XP may require more hardware than you have. Check the minimum hardware requirements for XP.

System Requirements for Windows XP Operating Systems:

Cut and paste the url for the Microsoft Web site listing those minimum requirements.

However, I'd set the requirements a bit higher than Microsoft's recommended minimum.

Since you are already having problems, I would argue against trying to install XP without reformatting.

First of all, the only thing you are going to save, is backing up your personal files.

If you rename or remove (preferred) the Windows folder, and then install XP, you will still need to re-install ALL of your application software.

Of course, some of your existing software may not even work with XP.
Some that I know of (EasyCD Creator version 4, Power DVD version 3)

Make sure that you have at least 2X the CPU speed and minimum disk space for XP.
Also, I recommend at least 256MB of RAM.

Sound Cards, Modems, Scanners and Printers have been XP driver issues.
Check with each manufacture for XP support and drivers.

I was afraid that this was the proper answer. Thanks for reminding me about certain hardware not working with XP. I knew that, but had not thought about it recently.
