installing workstation

By mjkqb ·
Trying to install NT Workstation. Have 17 gig HD 1 Primary partition, 1 extended,
8 logical drives in extended. Everything fat 16. Have already installed
98 on c drive and NT Server on d drive. Trying to use E drive for
Workstation. Get following errors during setup.
1. Partition. you've selected is recognized by NT but is unformatted
or damaged. Setup will reformat this partition. Press C, I do so and
receive error #2.

2.Your C drive is unformatted or damaged or formatted with a file
system that is not compatible with NT. Setup will reformat partition.
All datat on C will be lost.

I ran into the same problem when installing Server. I had to make sure
the drive was not formatted before installing. My E drive is not yet formatted, yet no luck installing Workstation. The only difference I can think of is that none of the other drives had been formatted yet when I
installed Server. Now they are formatted (with exception of E) and have tons of files on them which I don't want to delete then reinstall.

Help! Thanks
One other thing, when menu for selecting which drive to install on appears, all drives are listed as damaged or unformatted. Also only 8 gigs are listed, the other 8 gigs are listed as unpartitioned. also the install CD is an evalution version for MSCE study and is fairly old.

Although you mention that everything is FAT16, it looks like FAT32 from Win98 is somewhat interfering in the MBR. I had a fairly similar problem sometime. Try either
a) Format the vacant partitions from a MSDOS (6.22, not Win95/9 floppy disk or
b) Format a floppy as FAT form NT server and copy the boot files: boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr. Modify boot.ini as apropriate so it points to your NT Server partition and boot from that floppy.
c) Run winnt32 from NT server.

Good luck

To your 2nd question about MSDOPS floppies. You need a machine running MSDOS. Yes, it is something very old and unknown for young people but it stil works. Perhaps a friend of yoour have a Win95 PC with the "previous verison of DOS" still installed. Then, from the C prompt just type format a: /s

Hi
If you have Partition Magic, try to resize the drive to 8 bit that will turn it into FAT16, as that is the only system WIN NT recognize, or go to FDISK and make it to maximum 2048 kb (it is the same FAT16)
The other thing that it does not recognize more than 8GB is to the fact that you need the third party SCSI controller driver
