Installing XP on 2nd Partition...

By cyberghost_1 ·
I?m running Win7 Ultimate x86 on a Compaq Netbook... I upgraded from XP which was the factory OS. Here is the issue... I?ve asked a few Q concerning this problem, but now my Q is: I want install XP again but on a new Partition, I created the Partition just fine... the issue is that during the XP installation it doesn?t detect ANY Partition EXCEPT the Recovery HP_TOOLS Partition1 on C:... I doesn?t detect the Win7 installation or the new partition...formatted or not... Previously i was told that XP won?t detect Win7 or the new partition cuz its a newer format... so HOW DO I INSTALL XP ON THE NEW PARTITION??? I had an idea, since i?m doing this by making bootable USB Flash drives, my idea is to use Win98 and fdisk to manage the new partition and install 98 first... that is if it even detects any partitions like XP didn?t... If I manage to install 98, technically i can upgrade to XP from there...right... I would really appreciate all and any help with this Q... PLS!! Thx...

Did you format it?

by seanferd In reply to Installing XP on 2nd Part ...

Yes, it is a different version of NTFS, but apparently XP can install on it.

Did you do it like this?

Don't forget that if this system uses SATA, you'll need have the drivers to install XP.

Apparently you are not using the Compaq supplied Recovery Disc

by OH Smeg In reply to Installing XP on 2nd Part ...

But a OEM Disc of XP so you need to add the XP Driver.

This system has a SATA HDD and when XP was made there where no SATA Controllers or HDD so this is newer Hardware than the OS you are attempting to install on this system. When the First Blue Screen appears for the XP installer you can press the F6 Key and then somehow add the SATA Driver or probably the better option Slipstream the SATA Driver to the Install Disc/Media with something like nLite available free here

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

Just remember to read the instructions listed under Guides on their Web Site here

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/

From my understanding after looking at this unit the HP Tools Partition isn't actually on the HDD but on a Chip on the M'Board so the XP Installer isn't actually seeing the HDD at all.

SATA XP Driver...

by cyberghost_1 In reply to Apparently you are not us ...

Actually u got it... it does ask me for a driver on the 1st blue screen, didn?t know it had anything to do with my HDD being SATA-II, but I will give it a try...thanks for the advice...i will let u know how it turns out. So technically by adding the SATA/XP driver it should detect the HDD and everything shoulg go smoothly right??

I have a netbook so there is no OEM disc, I made a bootable USB Flash drive of XP from an ISO of XP that I already had...
One more thing... the controllers are found at: C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\ correct?? In this case for the Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller...right??

Yep the XP install Disc

by OH Smeg In reply to SATA XP Driver...

Was made before SATA Drives where made so there is no provision in the code to support SATA Drives and Controllers.

When you add the SATA Driver it will work.

Where are the SATA drivers....

by cyberghost_1 In reply to Yep the XP install Disc

I managed to successfully create a bootable ISO with nLite and slipstream what I thought was the SATA .inf file named disk.inf... from C:\Windows\system32\drivestore... according to Everest that is the .inf file for the HDD, but XP still didnt detect the HDD... then I looked in C:\Windows\inf folder and I found: amdsata.inf.... could that be the driver that I need?? I really have no idea where to find the driver for my SATA HDD... its a Toshiba MK1665GSX ATA...

You get the SATA Driver from HP's Web Site

by OH Smeg In reply to Where are the SATA driver ...

Under the Downloads for this model.

It will either be called SATA Driver, RAID Driver or Chip Set Driver.
