reinstall W98 on Sun Micro workstation
I had a customer come in with a computer that he said he bought from a friend. He has absolutely no disks and has a ton of stuff on the pc he does not want to loose, format and install is not an option yet. The pc starts and an Explorer illegal operation error message pops up. When I click past it the desktop was there with no icons. I tried all sorts of file extractions to fix to no avail. I have tried to reinstall W98 and get setup detection error SU0013. Iwas finally able to do a scanreg /restore and now the error message is msgsrv32 illegal operation and when I click it goes to blank desktop. How do I reinstall W98 to this computer. The autoexec file reads
echo off rem insert by Sun Microsystems Setup
set dbroot=c:\adabas
rem insert by Sun Microsystems Setup
set dbwork=c:\adabas\sql
rem insert by Sun Microsystems Setup
set dbconfig=c:\adabas\sql
rem insert by Sun Microsystems Setup
set path=%path%;c:\adabas\bin
rem insert by Sun Microsystems Setup
set path=%path%;c:\adabas\pgm
Where do I reinstall W98

A MS query says to start in MS-DOS and then install win98. Apparently setup from the cd does not correctly register the hard drive

w2ktechman, Do you mean using F8 and selecting command prompt or a start up disk?

The SU0013 error said
Setup cannot create files on your statup drive and cannot set up Windows 98.
If you have HDFS or NTFS you must first create an MS DOS boot partition If you have LANtastic server or Super SOC Compression disable it.

sorry about the delay, been real busy. I meant MS-DOS startup disks.
If you do not have any, you can go to bootdisk.com and create one. You should be able to overwrite the OS or install in a different directory.
It sounds like though, the Hard drives format is corrupted, and maybe the drive is failing. If you want to try to keep the data I would suggest slaving the drive and collecting what you need, then fdisk/format. If the drive still wont work well, try a low level format or replace it.
