Intel Core 2 Duo 64-bit with WinXP Pro 32-bit or WinVista 64-bit

By Laibeus ·
Hi,

I bought last month a new PC, it is an Intel Core 2 Duo 64-bit - the retailer didn't even told me its 64-bit, coz he said that there are no 32-bit Core 2 Duo here in the Philippines.

But since Vista wasn't released then, I opted to get WinXP Pro, and since I don't know that my PC's a 64-bit, I ended up with a WinXP Pro 32-bit.

My first question then is, will WinXP Pro 32-bit take advantage of the 64-bit features? I understand from a preliminary research, I won't be able to use the memory block thingy, but are there any other 64-bit features that I can use?

My second question is should I upgrade to Vista 64-bit now or wait a little longer for the drivers to get updated to 64-bit? Coz I don't want to end up with a PC with o 64-bit drivers.

Finally, correct me if I'm wrong, if I'm using a 64-bit OS like Vista, I won't be able to run DOS applications anymore right? Unless I use a DOS-shell app?

PS
Turned out, Intel do not sell Intel Core 2 Duo 32-bit here in the Philippines and Microsoft isn't selling WinXP Pro 64-bit here... so my only option really is Vista 64-bit which as of the time of this writing, it's Vista's launch party here.

Thank you very much!!

Well I think you'll find

That even considering looking at the 64 Bit version of any form of Windows there are currently no where enough drivers or software available at this point in time.

The 64 Bit version of Windows leaves a very lot to be desired in the currently available drivers or other hardware related devices.

Sorry to be asking a question that's off the subject but I was curious after seeing a reply from "HAL 9000", is this the same person that used to host a Rocket Arena 2 server based in LA, California?! Please discard this reply if I have the wrong person...

If so, please get back to me and let me know. I and a bunch of other old-school dedicated RA2 players are saden by the fact that the server no longer exists. I would like to work something out in getting back the server online.

My contact is: lescodilla@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon...

update to drivers and 64-bit

by erniem1970 In reply to Well I think you'll find

Recently Vista has a great new service pack that really does wonders and yes, you can run 32-bit software on the 64-bit version of Vista, however keep in mind to update your drivers for both hard ware and software as they are properly available. I had no problems myself and there will be no need for XP anymore as the support will stop also this summer.
