Intel Job Cuts

By fungus-among-us ·
I saw it on CNN last night while I was enjoying some after work drinks and pizza. Pizza arrived before the full story was reported, so I didn't catch all of the story.

Did I see it correctly???? They're cutting 10,500 jobs? How can that be? With the release of Conroe (Core 2 Duo), aka "AMD killer", you'd think they'd be HIRING more people.

Manufacturing versus design

by JamesRL In reply to Intel Job Cuts

Its not the manufacturing that requires the human resources, its already highly automated.

Its the design of the next generation of chips that requires the bodies. One presumes that now that we all have a pretty big boost, they have some time before the next wave is needed.

the "AMD Killer"

by w2ktechman In reply to Intel Job Cuts

is only until the next combat round. Over the next few months both Intel and AMD will be competing for true quad-core power. But, that means that the majority of the product has already been developed, so they do not need as many people right now. I bet they start hiring again next year around this time, or a little earlier.
